In Conversation with Jesse Eisenberg and Jonathan Jakubowicz (Video interview)
AJFF In Conversation: The Webinar | Atlanta Jewish Film Festival
“It was really an exhilarating process. Jonathan found this incredible teacher — his name is Lorin Eric Salm . . . . He’s one of the great mimes. He studied with Marceau at Marceau’s school in France, and then has since not only become a great teacher on his own but also become like a, almost a chronicler of Marceau’s life, and so I had this kind of two-pronged education. One was he was teaching me mime choreography that he made up for the movie that was derived from gestures and the full scope of Marceau’s work and teachings, and then I had this other education which was about the history of mime and the history of Marceau, and I got it from a guy who was, probably, aside from Jonathan, as adept and passionate a person could be, and it was just fantastic.”

The St. Louis Jewish Film Festival webinar featuring Jesse Eisenberg and Jonathan Jakubowicz (Video interview)

“Luckily we had a lot of time before we filmed, so Jonathan found this unbelievable mime teacher — his name is Lorin Eric Salm — he’s not only a mime teacher who studied with Marceau, but also a kind of chronicler and historian of Marceau’s life, so it was like this perfect marriage of practical education and academic history. So I felt totally prepared by the time we were in Prague filming.”

Jesse Eisenberg as Marcel Marceau (Audio interview)
All Of It With Alison Stewart – WNYC
“I had about nine months of classes — I guess, training, with this wonderful choreographer, Lorin Eric Salm, who not only studied with Marceau for a long time in France, but also is kind of like an historian for Marcel Marceau, and he choreographed all of the routines in the movie, and they’re just brilliant. I think people who know Marceau’s routines will recognize certain motifs and gestures in the choreography, but it’s entirely original, and will relate it to the specific scenes in the movie. Getting to study another artist, it was like taking a semester in college on a specific — because I learned not only the history, but I learned how to do it, and from almost like an academic perspective, because this guy Lorin is a real — is a kind of a collector and expert on Marceau’s work.”

Jesse Eisenberg’s 2 New Films (Audio interview)
Here & Now – WBUR
“I studied mime for about nine months with this wonderful teacher, Lorin Eric Salm, and he’s just a fantastic teacher, but not only a fantasitc teacher and disciple of Marceau, but also a kind of chronicler of Marcel Marceau’s life and of mime in general and the history of mime, and so I had this unbelievable, lengthy, nine-month lesson, not only in my routines that I had to learn for the movie which were choreographed by Lorin, but also I learned the history of mime and got to appreciate the ideas of this kind of more abstract performance that is — it’s not the kind of literal performances that I’m used to either writing or acting in.”

Jesse Eisenberg on ‘Vivarium’, ‘Resistance’, & if He’d Play Another Lex Luthor Type
By Christina Radish | Collider
“I spent about nine months with this really brilliant guy, Lorin Eric Salm, who’s just this amazing teacher that not only studied with Marceau for years, but has almost chronicled Marceau’s life. And so, I had this two-pronged education of learning – learning about Marceau and mime, but also learning these routines, learning how to perform, and learning the kind of beauty that comes with more abstract art that [sic] I’m used to – art that doesn’t have any literal manifestation. It was just thrilling.”

Jesse Eisenberg Talks Mimes, Zombies and Homebound Fever Dreams
By Lina Lecaro | L.A. Weekly
“My main challenge with this movie, obviously, was learning mime. I didn’t have to be as good as Marceau in his prime, but I had to be 1,000 times better than I initially was. I studied for about six months with this amazing choreographer Lorin Eric Salm, who studied with Marceau in Paris and has become a chronicler of his life. It was an amazing experience, learning about the history of mime while learning to perform.”

Jesse Eisenberg plays Marcel Marceau in ‘Resistance’ and home buyer in ‘Vivarium’
By Peter Larsen | Daily News and Press Enterprise
“To prepare for the role, Eisenberg worked for nine months with the mime Lorin Eric Salm, who trained with Marceau before his death in 2007.
“‘He not only choreographed these incredible routines in the movie but also worked with me to kind of make them my own, and make it feel like it would be for Marceau starting out,’ he says. ‘So that it felt like if you know Marceau’s work you could recognize that this would be kind of an early version of him developing it.'”

“The most daunting task Eisenberg faced was mastering mime. . . . Eisenberg spent nine months studying mime with Lorin Eric Salm, a student of Marceau and an important mime in his own right. He served as the film’s choreographer, fashioning each of Marceau’s routines.
“‘They’re original and designed for the film, but fully capture Marceau’s themes and gestures,’ said Eisenberg.”
