Character Movement Coach and Mime Coach for
Film, Television, Commercials, Stage, Live Performance, Motion Capture, and Animation
What is a Movement Coach?
A movement coach is concerned with movement that expresses the personality or physical traits of a character in the course of that character’s normal activities. A movement coach might also stage movement for one or a group of actors, creating “movement choreography” (unlike dance choreography, which is more dance- or music-oriented). The movement coach’s work can involve movement design, coaching talent, and addressing specialized movement styles or situations like mime, motion capture / performance capture, and green screen work.
Movement Design
Bringing the director’s vision to the screen or stage often requires designing special movement for characters representing fictional cultures, alien species, robots, zombies, animals, and more. Whether the characters are played by live actors, animatronic figures, or are CGI/animated, Lorin collaborates on the movement design by assisting with concept, research, and/or creation. (For animated projects, also see his Character Movement for Animation Workshops.)
Coaching Talent
An actor’s movement skills are frequently not the director’s top priority, so the actors they cast may need special training when their roles have unusual movement requirements. Actors playing aliens, robots, animals, and other non-human characters may need special movement coaching, as well as those playing different ages or bringing comic book, sci-fi, or fantasy heroes and villains to life. Actors portraying characters based on famous, real-life people will also benefit from having a movement coach to help analyze, understand, and believably recreate those people’s way of moving. Lorin works directly with the actors in rehearsal and/or on set, from one-on-one coaching of principals to groups of extras. And when the actor needs a mime coach, there’s no one better in the industry.
Motion Capture & Green Screen
When the actor’s job calls for working in an empty space, simulating interaction with non-present characters, objects, environments, and effects, Lorin puts his expertise in illusion, character creation, and physical expression to work. He coaches actors in rehearsal or on set, consulting on which movements to use and how best to execute them with precision and for the desired effect.
